I am fifty years older than my two oldest grandchildren! Life is Great!
My birthday fell on Saturday this year so Steve and I planned an
outing with another missionary couple, Don and Marsha Livingstone. We left
Frankfurt at 6:00 am for the Dragon’s Gorge (Die Drachenschlucht). We arrived in the gorge while the dragons were still sleeping. It is a beautiful canyon of moss
and ferns, narrow passages, and water running beneath the walkways. Next stop was Johan Sebastian Bach’s house---a
museum telling of the Bach family musical heritage. A theater in the round showed Bach's music being played on antique organs around Europe. Headphones in the museum allowed us to hear
Bach selections with a commentary on his techniques.
We had lunch in an
outdoor café before we took in a UNESCO castle. This castle that was built
in the 1100’s. In the 1600’s a 4 year
old Hungarian girl named Elizabeth was brought to the castle for an arranged
marriage to the crown prince. At the
age of 14 they wed. When she was in her
20’s, after having 3 children, her husband was killed in the Crusades. She felt
inspired to abdicate the throne so she could serve the needy in her
kingdom. She was later given the title
Saint Elizabeth for her charitable work.
So Juliette, your middle name now has another story behind it! Frederick the Wise also protected Martin
Luther within the walls of this castle so that Luther could translate the New
Testament from Greek into German. Here are some pictures from the day:
